Exploring the Performance of Select-based Internet Servers

Internet servers, Web servers, performance, select, event dispatching Several previous studies have examined techniques for improving Internet server performance by investigating and improving operating system support for event-dispatching mechanisms. These studies have been mainly motivated by the commonly held belief that the overhead incurred in obtaining network I/O events using the select system call was too high to be used in environments with high request loads and large numbers of concurrent connections. However, recent work by Chandra and Mosberger [6] shows that a properly implemented selectbased server can outperform servers that utilize new and improved event-dispatching mechanisms that are significantly more scalable than select.

Analysis and Modeling of VoIP Servers: A Linear Programming Approach
The SIP protocol was standardized by the IETF at the application layer for initiating, managing, and terminating multimedia sessions and has been widely used as the main signaling protocol on both the Internet and VoIP networks. Most challenges in this protocol are overload and lack of proper state distribution. These challenges cause a wide range of next-generation network users to face a shar...
متن کاملScalability of Linux Event-Dispatch Mechanisms
event dispatching, Web servers, Internet servers, Linux, performance Many Internet servers these days have to handle not just heavy request loads, but also increasingly face large numbers of concurrent connections. In this paper, we discuss some of the event-dispatch mechanisms used by Internet servers to handle the network I/O generated by these request loads. We focus on the mechanisms suppor...
متن کاملExploring Effects and Learner Attitudes of Gadget-Based Internet Multimedia Reading
This mixed-methods study aimed at investigating the effects of a gadget-based Internet multimedia extensive reading program on promoting language proficiency. In so doing, a pretest-posttest design was applied in the quantitative phase to comparatively analyze outcomes of three classes of college-level EFL learners (two experimental groups and one control, each including 30 university students)...
متن کاملSelf-regulating Message Throughput in Enterprise Messaging Servers – A Feedback Control Solution
Enterprise Messaging is a very popular message exchange concept in asynchronous distributed computing environments. The Enterprise Messaging Servers are heavily used in building business critical Enterprise applications such as Internet based Order processing systems, pricing distribution of B2B, geographically dispersed enterprise applications. It is always desirable that Messaging Servers exh...
متن کاملScalable Kernel Performance for Internet Servers Under Realistic Loads
UNIX Internet servers with an event-driven architecture often perform poorly under real workloads, even if they perform well under laboratory benchmarking conditions. We investigated the poor performance of eventdriven servers. We found that the delays typical in widearea networks cause busy servers to manage a large number of simultaneous connections. We also observed that the select system ca...
